The study done by Meredith Downes, Anisya S. Thomas and Carolan McLarney focus on the practice of employing expatriates as a strategic move on the part of an MNC to increase the international experience and knowledge. They have go through with few things that should be consider. In order to avoid the expatriate failure, training and development are seen as things that should be given to the expatriates. One of the training is on the cultural training. The training is to helps the expatriate to feel more comfortable during their reassignment to new places.

From the study, the job satisfaction has been identified as the major thing to avoid a cultural shock when the expatriate reached at the new place. There are four external factors play a role in expatriate satisfaction. The four factors are: -

- Individual-level determinants of expatriate satisfaction
- Organizational-level determinants of expatriate satisfaction
- Environment-level determinant of expatriate satisfaction
- Satisfaction and performance

In training and development, the components of effective pre-departure training programs are the cultural awareness programs, preliminary visits, language training, practical assistance, training for the training role, TCN and HCN expatriate training and provision of training for non-traditional expatriate assignments.

In the study, the acquisition of “know-how” meant for the learning through internationalization. Where it contains market-specific knowledge, general knowledge and expatriation as a means of transferring knowledge.

The methods that have been used in this study are: -

- Sample/data collection
- Measures
- Model and analyses
- Results
- Organization performance

It has been stated that the purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between expatriate satisfaction and organizational performance. The cultural training that has been given to the expatriate will have more advantages then disadvantages. When the expatriates know and aware of the cultural on the country they are reassign to, it will be easier for them to adapt on the new environment. Plus, they will represent the organization and the country from where they come. It will be a good image as a whole. If you are/was an expatriate, have you ever attend a cultural training before you are post to other countries? If yes or even no, you will understand what I meant. Right readers?

Nonahanim: My long term for a better future is to have the title: “expat”.. Will I achieve it? InsyaAllah, dreams will never be dreams right.. ^_^
